Abstract: Sport in general, and the Olympic Games in particular, are arguably one of the more important factors in the development of international relations between states. There does not seem to be much literature relating to the relationship of sports and international relations, however further research suggests that for centuries nations have been coming together through the interaction of sport and the Olympic games. Economic diplomacy plays a major role in the development and growth of a state, and increasingly it has become recognized that sporting events can be another contributor to economic and social growth. This is perhaps best demonstrated by the competing bids placed by different nations on a regular basis to host the Olympic Games. Sport and international relations have become more interlinked, though still an emerging relationship. This dissertation will review the impact the Olympic Games have had on developing international relations and diplomacy over the years. Chapter one will provide a general introduction into the early development of sport and its links to diplomacy. The chapter will also review the definition of economic diplomacy and examine how it plays a key role in a state's advancement in the international arena. The argument that sport is a new form of modern diplomacy will also be examined. A history of sport in general will also be reviewed. Chapter two will continue to provide a brief description of sport and its emergence into society. It will also shed light on its emerging relationship with diplomacy. The global development of sport and the Olympic industry will show how the Olympics have become a global phenomenon. Sport and its links to culture will conclude the chapter. Chapter three will provide an analysis of Economic Diplomacy and the Olympic Games. There is a strong link between the two and an assessment will be made from a political, social and economic perspective. A few case studies from previous Olympics will form the basis of the appraisal. Chapter four will focus on the Olympic Games and International Relations. An attempt will be made to show the relationship between the two and eventually come to the conclusion on the extent of the impact the Olympics have had on the development of relations between states. The last chapter will focus on the effects and the power that the media has on sport, as well as the role of non state actors in international relations. The chapter will also focus on the issues that are brought about by negative elements that sometimes accompany sporting events. The role of non state actors has become very important in world politics and this will also be analysed, using three different types of non state actors as examples. The relationship between religion and sport will also be briefly discussed.
