Abstract: Description of the existence of two cities in the islands of Malta and Gozo with reference to documentation about the origins of the names. The existence of these islands is documented as back as the mid-fourth century A.C., with their geographic location described as ‘two islands are east of Horse Bon’ (Pseudo-Scylax). At that time, the islands were under the control of Carthage. In the 1st century B.C. (Diodorus) they are described as Phoenician colonies. Through these two sources it is established that these two cities were solidly established in pre-Roman times.
