The Mean-Sea Level Aquifer is the major natural water resource in the Maltese Islands. It is both a source of potable water as well as a source of water for agricultural purposes. The main areas of recharge to this aquifier can be divided into two main classes - those above the impermeable Blue Clay formation as is the Rabat-Dingli plateau, and the Globigerin and Lower Coralline Limestone outcrops southwards of the Wardija Ridge - the uppermost boundary of the aquifer. The protection of this natural resource is important.en_GB
