Abstract: This work is intended to give some general guidelines and knowledge on illustrations in school textbook. The main concern of this work is to examine the effectiveness of illustrations in textbooks. Chapter 1 is a brief introduction to the topic, followed by a review of the relevant research on the subject in Chapter 2. In the third part, the contents of two textbooks are analysed. Chapter 4 is a qualitative research regarding students' experience with textbooks. A bibliography and appendices are also included. I hope that this work will provoke interest in teachers, and other people who are responsible for the production and design of textbooks. I hope that those responsible in the selection of textbooks and others interested in illustrations as a means of communication will find it useful.
