Abstract: Sanctuaries have always been a subject for study in art, architecture and religion. However, many a time the study stops at that, without going any further in analysing the other roles that such places could have had in a society. The relevance of landscape in relation to the sanctuaries is very often neglected, hence losing one of the best tools in om hands to understand these sites. Landscape plays an important role and this is the reason why it will be given a lot of importance in my research of maritime sanctuaries and the roles that they played in society.
