Abstract: This is a study of four artists who have not yet been considered top rank artists according to the critics of Maltese art. What I want to do is gain a perspective of the field of art in Malta by a preliminary study of the habitus of these artists and their attitudes towards the market, in the hope that it will help in understanding the field of art as a whole. I began my reading research before my fieldwork. This required reading a few suggested books on art in general. I began reading in July 2000 and commenced my fieldwork late October 2000 till March 2001. My fieldwork consisted in inte1views with about twenty artists from different social classes, ages and gender. Narrowing my choice of artists down to four was very difficult since all of the artists were very interesting and helpful.
