Located mainly in the south-eastern part of the Island of Malta are six archaeological sites that have popularly come to be known as 'Roman Round Towers'. Observed and studied by a succession of travellers and scholars over the centuries, defence seems to have been the only role that has been attributed to these massively constructed structures. What or who these towers were actually defending has not been definitely ascertained nor has a pattern for their geographical distribution been detected.en_GB
