Abstract: Some problems were encountered during the writing of this dissertation. In some places, archaeological evidence is abundant, and of very good quality. Whilst in others it is scarce or not clear. This makes for a situation were parts of the story are clearer than others. Thus, in this work, some of the sections will be more copious than others. This is due to the greater amount of evidence available. I would like to thank Dr. Horatio Vella for his patience and for teaching me useful skills such as how to keep a reference whilst reading, and without whose help this dissertation would never have been done. Thanks also goes to Mr. Joe Magro Conti, who was the person who advised me on which books best served the purposes of the dissertation. I would also like to show my appreciation to the Head of the Department of Classics and Archaeology, Professor Anthony Bonanno, and to all the members of staff for the academic education they have given me over these years.
