Danze : a study of the importance of music in film and video production

Abstract

The following dissertation attempts to examine the importance of music in the context of a film or video soundtrack through the making of a short film entitled Danze. The first chapter identifies the study and outlines its purpose. It gives a brief overview as to what the functions of a film score are. Chapter two discusses these functions in greater detail. The role of the composer and the director is brought to light and different arguments and theories are discussed. This chapter also examines the use of music in certain films, particularly stressing the importance of the film score. Chapter three deals with the practical side of the dissertation. The actual making of the film is discussed illustrating the three stages of production. It also deals with certain techniques used throughout the production shoot. A critical in-depth analysis of Danze is given in Chapter four. The film is split into sequences and these are discussed individually. Camera technique, angles of shots, and the symbolism of some scenes are explained. The conclusion brings together theory and practice. Suggestions for further studies are presented as well as some personal thoughts on the subject.
