Abstract: The film industry is a fierce environment that does not forgive easily. It is therefore of the utmost importance that any product delivered to consumers is of the highest quality while ensuring a dependable return on investment. However, all productions have a lifespan that whatever marketing strategies employed, will eventually end and its role as a profit-making entity substantially diminished. Over long periods of time, although capable of retaining certain production qualities and, hopefully, cult-like status amongst audiences, the production loses significant cultural relevance, becoming visually out-dated and possibly disconnected from the current years' zeitgeist. Therefore, in order to rekindle interest in a franchise, various refurbishments are made to major elements within the franchise' universe, such as the retelling of the narrative mythologies via new visuals, production techniques and narrative content, while retaining key elements that identify the franchise at the core. The successful rebirth allows new audiences to experience the franchise, new boundaries for creative exploration and pioneering, as well as returning a franchise to a profitable status. The purpose of this study is twofold; firstly to study recent trends, techniques and methods in the rebooting of cinematic franchises and subsequently apply those methods to the 1985 Ruby/Spears cartoon The Centurions, and explore various routes for an effective renovation.
