Abstract: | As custodians of a country's documented history, National Archives collect and preserve official documents that form part of a country's national memory. However, their role goes beyond that of being a depot for old records. National Archives have to ensure that the collection entrusted in their care is not only made available to the public but is also being used. This can be accomplished if these institutions embrace an outreach strategy that not only spreads awareness but also entices fresh users. ln this light, this study focuses on outreach at the National Archives and in particular on how these institutions can target schoolchildren and make use of their collection to teach history. Commencing with an attempt at defining history, this study delves into the implications of teaching this subject using primary sources. This is followed by a review of how National Archives in Australia, United Kingdom and America are reaching out to young visitors and how the National Archives of Malta is addressing this issue. This work then moves on from a theoretical and analytical stage to action, drawing up and implementing a programme of activities based on a hands-on approach specifically aimed for secondary school students. The project revolves on an introduction to archives and the use of primary sources to teach history. An evaluation and recommendations on the way forward bring this study to a conclusion. Overall, this dissertation emphasizes the educational role of the National Archives and demonstrates how this institution can market itself and become more proactive by reaching out and investing in future generations. |
