Abstract: This dissertation discusses the relationship between children and television. It discusses children's reactions to television, children's television viewing, their learning from television and the effects television has on them. The main focus of the study lies in giving a general overview of the relationship between eight year old children and television. An insight in to their viewing habits, their reasons for watching television and their perceptions of the bad effects of television, is given. This study was conducted through qualitative research, utilising focus groups. Eight focus groups were conducted with eight, eight year olds in each group. Through several discussions it was found that eight year old children believe that television effects younger children rather than children of their own age.
