Abstract: The aim of this dissertation is to analyse the controversy at the introduction of Value Added Tax (VAT) in Malta through regular cartoonists' works published in local newspapers. The compact nature of the cartoons brought out the most salient points of the issue. The dissertation also aims to give the Maltese cartoon its due importance as a journalistic exercise. Chapter 1 examines the main phases of the political controversy, the official positions of the interested bodies and their use of the media. Chapter 2 is a literature review regarding media effects with particular emphasis on cartoon impact and history. Chapter 3 is made up of interviews with all the regular Maltese cartoonists involved in the VAT controversy. The real names ot the persons behind six pseudonyms are officially mentioned for the first time, bringing the amount of anonymous Maltese press cartoonists to just two. Chapter 4 analyses the different phases and aspects of the controversy through more than a hundred cartoons. Chapter 5 is a conclusion that comments about the use of cartoons during the controversy, while suggesting further studies.
