Economical design of portal frames

Abstract

The development of industry in Malta, in the last two decades, has brought along the introduction of various structural types which were relatively foreign to the Island. Except for the hangar-type structures constructed by the British Services, the use of beam and column structures, trusses, portal frames and their respective variations had been, up to the time, minimal. moreover, the economic adaptability of these structural types for local conditions has scarcely been studied.
