Abstract: Today, one third of our economy depends on tourism. In the past, Malta's economy depended very much on the Island's strategic position in the middle of the Mediterranean sea. During the Order of St.John of Jerusalem, for example, many Maltese people were employed as soldiers or sailors on the Order's galleys, others found work on the fortifications, in the dockyards, in the administrative machine and in the Auberges where the Knights lived. During the British period, considering the French period too short to consider, once again, Malta's economy relied very much on the Britain's military spending.
