Enhancing a viewer's exhibit experience

Abstract

This dissertation is based on exhibition design and supporting communication material with the main aim of designing a communicative tool to create a holistic and impacting exhibition experience for a target audience of 18 to 25 year olds. The objective of this project is to move away from more traditional communicative methods used in exhibitions and museums such as audio guides and display panels to a more creative combination of design and exhibition display. The project focused on local artist Antonio Sciortino and his famous sculpture, "Les Gavroches". A communicative tool was created aiming to bring the work of art to life and help young adults to appreciate the work of art. Two A3 vintage-looking newspapers were created in order to draw viewers back in time to the early 20th century. A carrier bag designed in a modem minimalistic style was then designed to carry the newspapers home. The space around the sculpture was manipulated by creating stands to enable viewers to admire the sculpture from different angles. The overall exhibit exterior had a modem look. ln further research, the designs, media forms and contents can be changed or varied to apply to different art works in order to capture young people's attention and bring life and light to traditional museums and exhibitions.
