Bamboo reinforced concrete beams : a low cost substitute for steel in developing countries

Abstract

The goal of this research was to determine the feasibility of bamboo reinforced concrete beams in low-end economic areas and developing countries. Therefore, a good understanding of the mechanical properties of bamboo was required first. The study applied an experimental methodology on the bamboo species of Tonkin bamboo. Tensile tests were conducted on bamboo samples to determine this property. The results are listed in tables and demonstrated on a series of Load Extension Graphs. From the analysis of these results, nodal behaviour was briefly discussed. The bamboo was then applied as reinforcement in seven concrete beam samples. Two nominally-identical beams were considered, to help understand the natural variation of bamboo, while six beams with different combinations of variables were also considered. The variables considered were the diameter size of the culm (20mm, 30mm or 40mm), the percentage reinforcement (2% or 3%) and the application of splints or whole culms to the beams. These were tested to analyse their flexural behaviour in a four-point flexural bending experimental test. The tensile strength, flexural capacity and deflection of the beam samples was recorded and presented in a series of Load-Displacement and Load-Strain Graphs. These were then analysed and compared with each other in order to deduce hypotheses about bamboo reinforced concrete beams. Finally, some recommendations for future studies were proposed, aspiring for this construction technique to gain effectiveness in developing countries.
