Abstract: In this dissertation, which deals with gender and the media, I study and analyze different speaking behaviour of male and female speakers when they are invited to a debate programme. By analyzing two main Maltese debate programmes, aired on the national Maltese television station, I examine to ascertain whether the time attributed to the main discussion is equally divided between the two genders present in the panel. In addition, I analyzed if different genders are particularly invited to speak about particular topics. While the discussion is being held, I also calculate the amount of interruptions that each gender expectations. Finally, I analyzed how the presenter treats different genders, I analyzed the types of questions that the presenter asks to the opposing gender and I also pay special attention to how the presenter introduces his panel. In my findings, I discovered that, the result obtained are similar to those found abroad.
