The sound of space : A study on the relationship between music and architecture

Abstract

Throughout the years, architects, urban planners and musicians have crossed paths and were found to be as sensitive to music as they were towards architecture. This raises questions as to whether these two disciplines follow the same line of thought. However, in order to better understand this relationship it is necessary to recognize the importance of space from which both sound and form are conceived, and may eventually be translated to music and architecture respectively. SPACE = SOUND+ FORM~ MUSIC+ ARCHITECTURE Although we are well aware of the visual sense of space, our understanding of the aural perception is still ambiguous. It is essential to identify the equal importance of both the intangible and the physical form in order to appreciate the environment in its totality. This dissertation attempts to recognize a deeper understanding of how the different elements of sound layer up to form our surrounding soundscape, which in turn may also result as the voice that makes environmental problems, such as noise pollution, audible to all those who listen.
