Abstract: The price of fuel and power has risen rapidly in the past few years and ways for securing the maximum economy in the use of heating fuel and electricity are continuously being sought. The primary aim of this paper is to offer advice about ways of saving energy in schools and other educational buildings, thereby reducing our dependence on imported fuel. and to do so in ways that are cost effective, in which any capital outlay is recouped within a short period, after which the authority will benefit from clear savings in running cost. The measures discussed are based upon experience and research work, such as that being carried out at the Building Research Establishment (B.R.E.) and the Department of Education and Science (D.E.S.) and include measures which in practice are equally appropriate to local educational buildings. Although the recommendations as outlined refer specifically to educational buildings, many of the measures apply equally to other building types.
