Abstract: In the course of writing this dissertation, a number of people have asked me why I chose to write about the sonic environment. Sound has always held a particular attraction to me, and even in Physics, the section on sound was the one I liked best. Probably this stemmed off from the fact that I had already studied music on a part-time basis for nine years, so that the theory of sound became an explanation to what I had already learnt in practice.
