Abstract: In undertaking this dissertation, “Urban Spaces in Malta”, my aim was to examine how a happy relationship of houses and surroundings can be brought about to create an environment which would appeal to human emotions. I do not propose recipes or easy-to-follow directions to be applied to Malta, but to pinpoint various ingredients which are found on the local scene and which could be mixed together into a dramatic relationship. I mention several examples where this is achieved and on the other hand I do not hesitate to point out where such relationships are lacking or have failed miserably. I start by describing what an urban space is and how it can give character, quality and excitement to out life in the city. I describe the many different kinds of urban spaces and how they perform their different functions. Comparing the urban spaces of various countries to those of our own, one may come to feel that he misses a lot of pleasure he has never known or suspected to exist.
