Diseases of the orange tree and their treatment

Abstract

In a former lecture, I had the honour to address you on the subject of the cultivation and the diseases of the Orange-tree, as a sequence to that lecture, it will now be my business to address you on the tre1tment of the diseases of the Orange-tree. The rational treatment of the diseases of the Vegetable Kingdom requires a perfect knowledge of the life-history of the diseased vegetables and of the parasites, both animal and vegetable, which cause them. An insight into agrarian chemistry and a knowledge of the meteorological conditions of the place will furnish many a useful indication in the treatment of vegetable diseases, particularly of those diseases, which for want of a better term, we call intrinsic, or constitutional, as they are not known to be due to the action of parasites. In the course of this lecture, we shall have to explain several important points of natural history and agrarian chemistry which have a bearing on the nature and treatment of the diseases of the orange-tree; and which were only hinted at in my former lecture.
