Abstract: The main aim of this text is to explore, study and analyse the construction and structural aspects of the Maltese Rotunda. Thus, the way it was constructed, the type and shape of stone used, how it was conceived on the basis of contemporary structural theories, and the behaviour of the structure, both in its normal condition and when it was pierced by a bomb in World War Two, are all aspects that have been dealt with through this dissertation. This dissertation has nothing to do with aesthetics. Contrary to most of existing literature referring to this building, this dissertation describes the building from the technical point of view, rather than praising or criticising its architecture. By so doing, it is felt that this engineering feat can be really appreciated, not only for its beauty or grand scale, but for the structural and constructional engineering it involves, with all the calculations, thoughts and concepts that were necessary for its construction.
