Abstract: | Imagine our Grand Harbour way back in he time when the majority of the surrounding land was rugged terrain and natural vegetation. The City of Valletta was not yet in existence and the waterfront around the harbour's perimeter was still totally undeveloped. The majestic fortifications which now give the harbour its unique identity where nowhere in sight. A scene which is difficult to visualize over today's view of a developed urbanized Mediterranean port, flanked by a busy capital city coupled with tourist and industrial development, both of uttermost importance to Malta's economy. In this old image of the Grand Harbour a Castle however stood on the top of the third promontory opposite Mount Sceberras, commanding open views of the harbour area and serving as a watchful eye over the entrance to the Grand Harbour. |
