Abstract: | Concrete is the most widely used building and construction material in the world. However, lightweight concrete retains a very small share of the market. A number of notable structures have been erected world-wide, yet designers appear to ignore this material. It is mainly rejected on the grounds of basic cost, whilst taking no account of significant benefits resulting from its use. These include reduced member sizes, longer clear spans, acoustic, thermal and numerous other property enhancements over ordinary concrete. This study is mainly concerned with finding ways of assessing one particular lightweight aggregate concrete in the local building context. After a general overview, the second part of this study shall consist of laboratory investigations that will cover both the aggregate and the concrete product. Methods for cost optimisation by alternative mix designs or structural design considerations, in the final section, are given. |
