The year 1980 is an important year in the history of Maltese Architecture. On the 15th February of that year, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) launched an international campaign for the restoration of monuments on the Maltese Islands. · This occurred as a result of a request made by the Government of the Republic of Malta during the twentieth session of the General Conference of UNESCO held in Paris. On that occasion, a resolution was passed to promote an international campaign for the safeguarding of historic buildings and sites in Malta and Gozo. The general aims of the campaign were to restore a number of monuments considered to be among the most important cultural relics of the Mediterranean region, to strengthen local restoration services and to mobilise international solidarity through technical co-operation and the use of all other available resources to complement local efforts for the preservation and the better presentation of our cultural heritage.en_GB
