Abstract: Computers are not new but what is new is the powerful desk top microcomputer available nowadays. The aim of this dissertation is to show how microcomputers can be used as an effective aid in building design. The dissertation is divided into two parts. Part I is meant as general background to the subject, it outlines the component parts of microcomputers, the development of architectural software, and some currently available architectural software that is relevant. Part II is meant to be able to show how to make use of the power of microcomputers and the many commercial software packages available for them, by integrating them through a suite of customized programs, into a integrated computerized building system to serve as an aid to architects and civil engineers in their practice.
