dc.description.abstract | This dissertation is presented in eight chapters. Chapter 1: is a descriptive introduction, explaining the methods of structural analysis which are available nowadays. The importance of optimal design is described in its general sense, giving its advantages and importance in the field of the engineer. The objectives of this dissertation are also expounded. Chapter 2: describes some well known roof truss-systems which are commonly used in industrial buildings. Special reference is attributed to pitched and horizontal trusses. Chapter 3: is devoted to the various types of Mathematical Optimisation Techniques that are available; treating both linear and non-linear Programming problems. Where possible, computer programs were structured to supplement this chapter and hence attain the objective of minimising the computational effort involved in Optimal Design. Chapter 4: describes the solution of Optimal Design of Trusses using graphical techniques. The main aim behind this chapter is to illustrate and give a better insight to Optimal Design. Chapter 5: deals with Optimal Design of Trusses with a fixed shape, using the Matrix Force method. Several computer programs have been structured to facilitate Optimal Design by this method and hence minimising the computational effort thus making the method more attractive and practical. | en_GB |
