Abstract: Concrete is one of the building materials which forms part of the most of todays structures, ranging from a concrete sewer pipe to a concrete bridge or dam. The type of concrete has to vary, according to the conditions it is being exposed to. A concrete sewer is under the influence of corrosive chemicals but a concrete slab situated in one of the storeys of a multistorey structure is only subjected to the dead and live loads. Therefore this study aims at defining what makes a good concrete for a particular use. With this understanding one can take special measures to reduce deterioration and also develop techniques for repair.
