Abstract: The effect of aggregates is usually considered as a secondary factor, with the water/cement ratio being treated as the unique factor in a concrete mix design that affects concrete strength. The scope of this dissertation was to study the influence of course aggregates on the different concrete properties. Following an extensive literature review, it was observed that various characteristics define the quality of a particular aggregate, and whether it is appropriate or not for a particular use. It was also noted that course aggregate only affected the properties of medium to higher strength concretes.
