Ephemeral entertainment stages in historic urban contexts : a study of design & spatial issues

Abstract

We live in a world where public open spaces in urban areas have lost most of their value with respect to what use they were originally designed for. Over many years the need for public open spaces within a town or city has increased considerably. Open public spaces vary in terms of many factors such as use, configuration and historical context. The spaces for this study are analyzed in their natural spatial configuration to better understand how they work. Throughout the ages, these spaces have been altered in order to host temporary activities and events. Crucial components concerning changes brought about by these temporary activities are extracted from this research. These components deal with themes concerning the visual and functional dimensions of the space. These components are studied in the light of how they change from when the space is fulfilling its original function. The local scene of music festivals and stage design is studied, and these components are applied to a local context by means of Case Studies. Open air festivals have had a major impact on Malta throughout these past years, and this ever growing culture needs to be addressed from both a spatial and architectural point of view, in order to achieve the best possible results and ultimate human experience.
