dc.description.abstract | Pedestrian and bicycle lanes are lacking from our road network resulting in a continuous unsafe situation for the pedestrians and cyclists who commute in our roads. The local situation contrasts with their international scene where the use of bicycles and the idea of travelling on foot for short distances, is on the increase. Good planning for these modes of transport will provide a safer environment for all the road users. This will lead to a marked shift from the use of private vehicles to cycling and walking. Such a change will be an important step in improving the quality of our environment. The aim of this dissertation is to present different planning situations that will demonstrate how the safety of pedestrians and cyclists can be achieved. Walking and cycling are two modes of transport that are not only environmentally friendly, but can leave positive impacts on our economy, especially with regards to the reduced travelling costs and as a positive asset for our tourist industry. Accidents in which pedestrians and cyclists are involved, both locally and abroad are studied and analysed. A way of designing safer facilities is proposed, when these accidents are the results of inadequate planning. | en_GB |
