Abstract: Malta is currently facing a major problem regarding the production of portable water, where overabstraction of groundwater is causing severe damage to the island's natural resources. During the 1940's the potentiometric surface of fresh water above sea level was recorded as being about four to five metres high. However, in 2006 the level decreased to only one meter (Food and agriculture Organisation of the United Nations, 2006).
