Abstract: Valletta, originally planned as a military city to serve as a bulwark against the Ottoman Empire, is presently the capital city of an island state, with different aspirations. Another city in Italy, namely Carlentini in Sicily, was also planned as a military city to resist the Turks. These two cities are now facing challenges that need to be focused upon to create a better awareness of their common historical roots and to induce an admiration of their architecture, planning and structure.
