Abstract: A study of pre-cast concrete elements manufacture in Malta and the potential of pre-cast concrete developments for architectural elements such Claddings, flooring, and staircases particularly using crushed glass aggregate. The problems currently encountered in the manufacture of such elements, and their performance over the life span of such elements. The precast element examined in this study was terrazzo tiles. Various aspects of manufacture will be reviewed and solutions to tackle these issues tested. The main focus of this study was the alkali-silica reaction between the glass aggregate and the concrete mix. The testing program devised to identify the effects of the glass aggregate on the rate of expansion of the concrete matrix and the effectiveness of suppressants on alkali-silica reaction, with a special focus on metakaolin.
