Abstract: | The 8th International Conference on Games and Learning Alliance (GALA 2019), organized by the Serious Games Society (SGS) and the University of Malta (UM), was held in the classical yet modern city of Athens, Greece, during November 27–29, 2019. The GALA series of conferences provide an excellent opportunity to foster the discussion of relevant topics in the growing field of serious games. The conference is a venue for academic researchers, industrial developers, teachers, and corporate decision-makers to meet and exchange experiences and knowledge in this multidisciplinary and challenging area. GALA 2019 received 77 submissions. We were happy that a total of 215 authors contributed their work to GALA 2019, with over 20% based in Greece. While the majority (85%) of authors are based in Europe, North and South America, Oceania, and the Middle East were also represented in the submissions. On average, papers received 2.8 reviews from Program Committee members: 38 of these papers were selected for presentation at the conference and 19 papers for presentation at a poster session of the conference. A total of 18 countries were represented in papers presented at the conference. The conference featured a location-based game centered around the conference venue, and a competition for the best serious game in terms of impact. It was an honor to have Maria Roussou, from the University of Athens, Greece, and Sander Bakkes from Utrecht University, the Netherlands, as keynote speakers at GALA 2019. The conference featured eight sessions of paper presentations, and topics ranged from serious game design practices, studies on engagement, learning, and usability of serious games, as well as virtual reality, tabletop games, storytelling, creativity, and awareness. Significant to this year, the conference was accompanied by an exhibition of serious games with a focus on impact. The exhibition was hosted at the Technopolis City of Athens, in collaboration with INNOVATHENS powered by Samsung. The exhibition was open to the general public and featured a number of games developed by local industries and institutions as well as European institutions. The exhibition concluded with a panel discussion about the future of serious games and their impact. As in previous years, selected best papers of the GALA conference will be published in a dedicated special issue of the International Journal of Serious Games, the scientific journal managed by the SGS, which is a great reference point for academics and practitioners to publish original research work on serious games and be informed about the latest developments in the field. We thank the authors for submitting many interesting, field-advancing papers, the Program Committee for reviewing these papers, and the SGS and UM for organizing the conference. |
