Abstract: Considering the rapid loss of British Architectural fabric on our islands, during the last decades, a need for a study of some important details in architectural design which these buildings illustrate, is felt essential. Presently we can still enjoy several different case studies, from residential edifices to public buildings, some examples of which still abound. The historical context of these buildings adds to their architectural significance and, as highlighted in the main text adds to the architectural value of these buildings and positions them as part of our valuable cultural heritage. The study aims to tackle Environmental and Service details at the Royal Naval Hospital at Bighi, attempting to discover their design details, details which change according to time of construction and specific use. The users' importance in such detailed design has always been an issue worth noting. But did these details effectively enhance the interior environment? Were these details designed and constructed effectively? What were the effects of such decisions in light of the internal conditions and the users' comfort? Details are studied both according to their specific use and also in their contribution towards an entire successful building performance. Their final implications on the Hospital's users, is conferred in the text. The ultimate aim is to emphasise on these criteria as an integral part of the building fabric. Moreover, this text is meant to create a sensitive awareness towards the practicability and design of British Architecture on our Islands.
