The sculptured altar crucifix in the Maltese islands : 1600-1800

Abstract

This thesis will attempt to study the sculptured altar crucifix as produced in wood, through related stylistic, historical, as well as technical data. A stylistic analysis of the selected works will be attempted so as to identify links with the local artistic and historical scenario as well as the general trends n the history of European Art. For the historical dimension, secondary sources will provide an important starting point for this review. Yet in most cases, the archival material referred to will be reassessed and supplemented by newly found material. New archival sources will help define the history of particular examples hitherto unpublished. Furthermore, a better understanding of the sculptured altar crucifix will be attempted through the study of the architectural space and context into which it is sited during the period under review. The technical component of this study will be investigated through the close study and inspection of the crucifixes under review. Since the majority of these works are polychromed, the concept of polychromy will be explored as a sideline to the main framework of the thesis. It is however envisaged that this will present problems due to still current practices of overpainting. The final interpretation of this date will take into account the important religious dimension inextricably linked to these works alongside the art historical dimension.
