An analytical approach towards the effects of hijacking on inflight crew and airlines

Abstract

This study focuses on exploring how aircraft hijacking, which is a form of terrorism, affects the inflight crew during, after, but even when a hijacking does not occur, due to the fear of the possibility of it happening at any given moment. Thus, this study aims to understand aircraft hijacking and explore the impact of aircraft hijacking on the inflight crew. Another objective is to engage airlines in understanding the fears and concerns of their employees. In order to achieve the study, aim and objectives, the research draws upon twenty interviews and a focus group carried with inflight crew. The use of openended questions posed during the interviews, allowed the participants to discuss and share their opinion about this matter. During the focus group, multiple scenarios were presented to the participants, that represent the various stages that may occur during and after a hijack. This served to explore some of the issues identified in the interviews in greater depth. The data was analysed using thematic analysis, which yielded the following themes; risk, safety, impact on inflight crew, training, and job satisfaction. The results from the research suggest that passengers’ safety is a priority to the inflight crew. Thus, inflight crew must be frequently trained to protect not only themselves, but also the passengers from any harm. This might be challenging since, during a hijack, the hijackers have the control of the aircraft. It also resulted that the inflight crew are willing to negotiate terms in return for the safety of the hostages. The study concludes by outlining the impacts that affect the inflight crew on various levels, and as uncovered through the literature review, may be considered to have a psychological and physical impact but may also effect the inflight crew outside of work, in terms of lifestyle. This study is important for the industry, as it serves to increase knowledge of the impact of hijacking on inflight crew, drawing on primary data. Secondly, it serves to raise awareness of how, even in the absence of a hijacking, inflight crew may still be affected on a psychological level. Subsequently, this study can be used to inform policy and practice, when considering the needs of staff.
