Abstract: | This dissertation explores the way gender portrayal on television changed in the last four decades and specifically what (if any) changes in gender representation took place from the 1980s to today. The study commences by outlining the feminist theories which played an important part in the changing roles of women on television. It also introduces the literature regarding men's movements, which only started to be compiled recently. The study concludes with a semiotic analysis of gender portrayal in two different episodes from different sitcoms, one of which was produced in the 1980s, the other in the 2000s. |
