Abstract: | The aim of this dissertation is to investigate and compare the thermal performance of newly developed concrete block forms when compared to the traditional 9 inch 'dobblu' concrete blocks and to propose ways in which the shape of the block could improve without altering the overall thickness. This study also investigates the effect of introducing reflective sheets within the air gaps of the blocks and analyses the resulting effects on surface temperature distribution. Results indicate that the new forms have improved thermal performance over the traditional form and that the introduction of reflective sheets helps to reduce further the U-Value. Results also show that altering the shape of the block affected the nature of surface temperature distribution throughout the wall. Thermal performance is also enhanced through the application of certain plasters or cladding panels, and the use of a particular plaster together with a single leaf of a proposed concrete block yields a U-Value which is in compliance with the local building regulations. |
