Abstract: The aim of this long essay is to provide an art historical gazetteer of the paintings, sculpture and other works of art in the Parish Church of the Annunciation in Balzan. The works under study pertain to the present collection in this Church. These works will be discussed in their historical, devotional and artistic context. This analysis will be set against a background of the historical development of the Church. This Long Essay is divided into eight sections: The first Chapter is mainly concerned with the development of the Parish Church of Balzan, as well as with the architectural characteristics of the establishment. The second section deals with the filial churches scattered throughout the village. These chapels have been mentioned as a number of works that were located within these premises were eventually transferred to the Parish Church of the Annunciation. A historical background is therefore necessary in order to understand and fully appreciate various works that are nowadays located within the Parish. The third section concerns itself with the works that are found within the choir. The fourth chapter explores the works found in the transept of the Rosary, which is located to the South of the Choir. The fifth section deals with the works of art and sculpture located within the transept of the Crucifix, located to the North of the Choir. The sixth chapter concerns itself with the works of art and sculpture that are found in the nave. The seventh section deals with the artistic embellishment made to the vault and ceiling of the Parish Church. The eighth section involves a grouping together of miscellaneous works of art located throughout the church premises.
