dc.description.abstract | 'L 'Antica Citta ' di Malta ', for many centuries, was the only permanent settlement on the island. All the different settlers that came to Malta altered the fabric and size of the town to suit their needs and ideologies. It adapted to every situation. Present day Mdina can be attributed to the major Baroque intervention that was carried out on the then typical Medieval City following the earthquake of 1693. Hence, it logically follows that beneath this fabric lay the remains of the town that evolved during the centuries. This was confirmed during the recent civil engineering works and the following archaeological excavations that unearthed some important archaeological remains. The aim of my dissertation is that through historical research, the different layers beneath the present fabric of Mdina (and surrounding Rabat) can be clearly identified. My study will hence establish how to integrate these remains with the present urban environment. This study will be carried out in the light of modern restoration theories and philosophies. To ensure a critical and analytical approach, I will also carry out a study of how similar historic cities in Europe and elsewhere have dealt with similar situations. The ultimate aim is that, planned intervention carried out on the present fabric will enable the numerous visitors to understand and appreciate the complete history and events that have characterised this hilltop town. | en_GB |
