Abstract: The fundamental principle behind this study is the relationship between vandalism and design particularly housing estate design. No amount of research is ever likely to establish explicitly the complex set of interactions between urban design, social organisation, and the incidence of vandalism, however an attempt has been made to observe the incidence of vandalism in three housing estates which information policies. One of the major aspects of the study has been to assess the potential of architectural and planning factors influencing vandalism but also social and cultural ones. The research itself derives from a variety of academic fields which formed part of the five year B.E.&A. course, these include: architecture, urban planning and design, urban geography, sociology and psychology. For this reason several professional persons were consulted ranging from planners and architects to magistrates, police, and social workers, to whom I am sincerely grateful.
