Abstract: The objective of this dissertation is to determine whether local organisations feel the need to measure their intellectual capital, in order to be able to manage it more effectively. Intellectual capital is represented by intangible assets, therefore an organisation can never own and control its intellectual capital in the same way it owns and controls tangible assets. As a result, intellectual capital is excluded from an organisation’s set of financial statements. However, several foreign organisations are attempting to assign a value to their intellectual capital and are also devising measures which enable them to get an indication of the value of each component of intellectual capital. These measures are not financial but rather in the form of operational measures. In this way, these firms are attempting to control the value of their intellectual capital.
