Abstract: Myth gives an insight into the human mind, and no myth portrays this better than 'Eros and Psyche'. This understanding of the human mind and ambition can be seen through both the philosophical and psychological interpretations of this tale, as both ultimately lead to the protagonist, Psyche, gaining entrance to a higher form of consciousness. The focus of this thesis is to research a subject that has a lack of information, especially in regards to Robert Bridges' retelling of the myth. While chapters 1 and 2 focus on different elements of the myth, they both end with a similar conclusion, that Psyche represents a part of the human mind or soul that wishes to attain individuation, or become closer to 'the one' in Neoplatonic terms. Through this interpretation, one can better understand the human mind and soul as well as the motivations that drive people. While the overall story was kept in line with the original, Bridges imbued the tale with Hellenistic elements and descriptions that strengthened the overall message of the myth. Both the philosophical and psychological interpretations emerged even more clearly through Bridges' description. This myth in particular is being analysed as it portrays the excellent knowledge that the writers held in regards to the psyche of the human being, even prior to the formation of psychology.
