Landfilling : design and construction considerations

Abstract

All the garbage generated by Malta's inhabitants and the tourists who everyday visit us is today being dumped, trampled over by bulldozers and covered up at Maghtab. There are no scientific methods being followed in its disposal and in the manner it is being "stored". All this, besides the creation of Mount Maghtab - a disproportionate eyesore to say the least - is in effect a threat to the environment. This dissertation after examining the general situation in Malta passes on to look in a general manner at modem landfilling techniques. The adverse products of a landfill and their components and effects on the environment are then examined, as are modem solutions on how to contain these products. The proposed new landfill is then gone over in detail ending up with various remarks on the topics covered.
