Abstract: Theoretical discussions on the relevance of managerial know-how for the cohesion of complex organisation have now become common place in literature. In industry especially, the quality of managerial direction very often determines the success of the enterprise. Good management is evident not only in the internal politics of the concern in worker-management relationships primarily but also in the image of itself and of the type of product which industry is seeking to promote on the open market. Managers and industry are in fact often found to be so well fused in the mentality of many both inside and outside the particular concern in which specific conditions are held - that it is often difficult to discuss the success or failure of such concerns without reference to the qualities and achievements of the 'men at the top'. This happens even in a situation in which bureaucracy and formal organisation have already invaded and replaced the erst-while, face-to-face type of relationships.
