Abstract: "In a few months from now, the euro will be reality. By creating the single currency, Europe will be offering its citizens, its children and its partners in the wider world a more concrete symbol of the common destiny it has freely chosen: that of building a community based on peace and prosperity." The EU means different things to different people. For some, it has been at the core of efforts to help maintain peace over the past fifty years whilst for others it signifies political and financial impotency. One of the EU's major works, the European single currency, will come into effect as from 1st January 1999 and this is a crucial step in the process of European integration, which will be important for all companies, big and small. Businesses have already seen the advantages of European integration in the form of single market whilst many others will want to understand such benefits achieved from the EU.
